Shutruk-Nahhunte I
(reigned ca. 1185-1155 b.c.)
   A prominent king of the ancient nation-state of Elam, which bordered the Meso-potamian plains in the east. It appears that Shutruk-Nahhunte established the Sutrukid dynasty of Elam. Like many Elamite rulers before him, he disliked the Babylonians and wished to see much of southern Mesopotamia come under Elam's control. To that end, in 1155 b.c.heled a large military force in a lightning campaign, capturing the cities of Kish, Sippar, and the much-coveted Babylon. In the latter, Shutruk-Nahhunte removed the last Kassite Babylonian ruler, Zababa-shum-iddina, and seized an enormous amount of booty. Among the precious artifacts the Elamites carried back to Susa were the black diorite stele containing Hammurabi's famous law code and sacred statues of Marduk and other Babylonian gods. These thefts greatly angered and insulted the Babylonian people, many of whom cursed Elam and its king to the gods. Those who did so must have thought these curses were successful, for soon after he put his own son, Kudur-Nahhunte, on the Babylonian throne, Shutruk-Nahhunte suddenly died of unknown causes.
